Alina is determined to rescue her childhood friend Voichita from the monastery she was sent to after both girls were ejected from an orphanage at the age of eighteen. Alina's single-minded resolve excludes any consideration that the docile Voichita might have actually found fulfillment in this austere retreat - and a means of forgetting the forbidden love she and Alina once shared. Standing between them is the unyielding "Papa", the head of the monastic order. He soon comes to believe that Alina has fallen prey to demonic possession, and it is his duty to chastise her soul.
Based on the non-fiction novels of Tatiana Niculescu Bran.

Aside from the morning hangover, his parents, the battle with nicotine and car problems, Marius Vizereanu's greatest stress factor is the imminent visit to the cramped apartment where his young daughter Sofia lives with her grandmother Coca, mother Otilia, his ex, and Otilia's new partner, Aurel. Marius is an onlooker there at best, but today he wants to pickup Sofia to take her on a seaside outing. When he knocks on the door, they all try to prevent it, pretending the girl is sick with high fever. Marius suspects they're lying, insists on having his own way and before long polite conversations degenerate into loud arguments, then into blows and the police are called.

"Cristian Mungiu, who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his last full-length film, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, will attend the festival to present his latest movie, Beyond the Hills. This new film, which won a joint Best Actress Award and the Best Screenplay prize at this year’s Cannes Festival, is the story of a friends who meet in an orphanage.
One moves to Germany while the other makes a life in a convent, but their friendship, as well as their bond to a priest, endures as the rest of their world changes. This young director is one of the most talented and exciting in the world and his follow- up to 4 Months has generated a great deal of excitement among cineastes."
