Writing, Reading and Teaching Literature across Borders

FRI, September 26, 7:00 pm | RCINY Auditorium Writing, Reading and Teaching Literature across Borders A presentation by Liviu Papadima and Calin-Andrei Mihailescu, focusing on the current trend among Romanians to also write for a potential foreign audience, on translation as a textual mediator, and on teaching literature abroad as cultural mediation.
"We're readers, we're writers, we're teachers," say RCINY guests. "At times, we read together, wrote together and taught together. Literary texts are our meat; but the bones are natural. How to juggle texts over many lands without breaking our bones: this is the topic of today's conversation."

The topics to be approached in a cascading style include: hyphenated Romanians and their literary tastes; bracketed canons of Romanian literature; random and not-so-random translations from Romanian into other tongues; what literature gets to be taught in foreign universities.

Liviu Papadima is a Professor of Romanian literature and the Dean of Philology at the University of Bucharest. Călin-Andrei Mihăilescu is a Professor of Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, and Spanish at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada
