Theatre director Radu Afrim, best known for his colourful incursions into alternative lifestyles and his revisionist take on the Western dramatic traditions, joins a pool of outstanding peers to explore, through a series of workshops and meetings, the best ways to increase the presence of European creativity on the British stage. They will look for ways of collaborating with venues such as the Barbican, the Gate Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith and the Young Vic. The project, entitled 'Theatre of Europe' and led by promoter Henriette Morrison with the support of EUNIC London and the European Comission Representation in the UK, is expected to catalyse new, original work by European talent in British theatres.
Radu Afrim's bold and sometimes controversial work is hosted by Europe's most renowned theatres. The daring director is the driving force behind a momentous thematic and aesthetic revamp of Romanian theatre and was instrumental in presenting writers like Dea Loher, Vassili Sigarev, Hanoch Levin, Jon Fosse, Jean-Luc Lagarce and David Greig to the Romanian audiences. Henriette Morrison was introduced to his work last November during a research trip to Romania organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
