The Irresistible Force

Following his successful project Impreuna/Together (you can see the performance), Romanian visual artist Matei Bejenaru takes part in the Tate Modern group exhibition The Irresistible Force. The exhibition looks at how economic forces shape our lives, as cultural values and traditions are realigned by global capitalism. Addressing issues from celebrity culture to migration, the service industry and privatisation, international artists Conrad Bakker, Matei Bejenaru, Tim Davis, Claire Fontaine, Mika Rottenberg, Michael Stevenson and Judi Werthein reflect on the repositioning of cultural values by globalisation and market forces. The exhibition is curated by Ben Borthwick and Kerryn Greenberg.

Matei Bejenaru's contribution is a Travelling Guide which includes information about the Romanian nationals who attempted to work illegally in the UK before Romania joined the EU. The work was shown in 2006 at Thyssen-Bornemisza Contemporary Art in Vienna and in 2007 at the Prague Biennial 3 and at the Galeria Posibila in Bucharest.

Matei Bejenaru is a visual artist who teaches photography and video at the Arts University in Iasi, Romania. He is the founder and artistic director of Periferic Biennial in Iasi. His art projects in recent years have focused on the situation of Romanian nationals who live and work abroad.
