On June 22, 1941, Germany and Romania attack Soviet Russia. Several days later, Curzio Malaparte, an Italian writer and journalist, arrives in Iasi, a city in northern Moldova, on his way to the front. He is suffering from a severe allergy, and his only chance of recovery is by finding the Jewish allergist Josef Gruber. Several days prior to his arrival, Curzio discovers that a violent anti-Semitic pogrom took place in Iasi and a large number of the city's Jews were deported with Josef Gruber among them. With the aid of the Italian Consul, Curzio tries to obtain an official warrant to bring Dr. Gruber back, but he is confronted by indifference, rudeness, and the desire of the Romanian authorities to hide something about the deportation of the city's Jews. Together with the Italian Consul, Curzio sets out in search of Dr. Gruber, leading him to a station 20 kilometers away....
Over the past several years, veteran Romanian filmmaker Radu Gabrea has chosen to make films exposing the Jewish legacy in his homeland (Struma, JFF 2001, Goldfaden's Legacy, JJFF 2004, Rumenye Rumenye, JJFF 2006, The Beheaded Rooster, JJFF 2007). With Gruber's Journey, Gabrea skilfully creates "an absorbing tragi-comedy" portraying a "dark and shameful period of Romanian history" (The Guardian).

בשנים האחרונות בחר ראדו גאברה, קולנוען רומני ותיק, לעסוק בסרטיו בנושאים החושפים את מורשת מולדתו (סטרומה, פסטיבל הקולנוע ירושלים, 2001, מורשתו של הסנדק, פסטיבל 2004, רומניה רומניה, הפסטיבל היהודי 2006, תרנגול חסר ראש, הפסטיבל היהודי, 2007). ב'מסע של גרובר', מצליח גבראה ליצור בכישרון רב " טרגדיה קומית מרתקת" ומצליח לתאר "תקופה אפלה ומביישת בהסטוריה של רומניה".
