The lecture, delivered by theatre critic Oana Cristea Grigorescu, offers a comprehensive overview of the evolution and identity of Romanian drama over the past two decades. Through the analysis of seven representative plays by contemporary authors, the talk explores how Romanian dramaturgy has responded to the social, political, and moral challenges of post-1989 society. The selected works highlight themes such as family and personal trauma, recent history, collective memory, gender-based violence, and interethnic tensions, offering a vivid portrait of a society in transformation. Including playwrights of Romanian, Hungarian, and German backgrounds, the lecture reflects the multicultural character of Romania’s theatrical landscape and invites international audiences to discover the richness, relevance, and artistic power of its new drama.

Oana Cristea Grigorescu is a theatre critic and producer of audio dramas at Radio Romania Bucharest, in the National Audio Drama Department.
