TESTING ROMANIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. Babeș-Bolyai University – Romanian Cultural Institute Consortium

With an intense preoccupation for promoting the Romanian language abroad, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest serves, through its numerous centers on various continents, as a true ambassador of the Romanian language and culture.

Thus, The Romanian Cultural Institute and Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca have created the BBU-RCI Consortium for Testing Romanian as a Foreign Language and submitted together a suite of examinations to the ALTE audit. With the full support of the ALTE Secretariat and the inspiring and precious guidance of our esteemed auditor, Henk Kuijper, we successfully passed the ALTE audit and became full ALTE members.

Therefore, starting with 2018, the first sessions of examination for obtaining an international certificate in Romanian language will be organized. The examinations will be carried out for the levels A1, A2, B1 and B2, the last one being a high stake examination given the fact that it facilitates admission in universities in Romania for foreign students. All four examinations have a similar structure, testing both oral and written receptive and productive abilities, including a component of elements of communication construction (grammar and vocabulary), as well. The examinations are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and have been constantly improved in the years when The Romanian Cultural Institute as well as Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca held the position of affiliated institutions of ALTE.
