
Mobility for arts professionals and their work is a significant objective of the Romanian Cultural Institutes abroad (RCIA). To this end, the network offers a number of types of residencies and grants for all eligible persons. 1. Residency at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London
This programme allows eligible candidates to work in a multicultural capital city that is unique in its ethnic diversity and the complexity of its cultural life. The objectives of the programme are to facilitate access to the British art scene for Romanian artists and to create opportunities for the development of a collaborative project on a topic identified in advance; to create an archive of artworks and projects that can then be promoted through the global network of the Romanian Cultural Institute, with the aim of bringing Romanian values to the awareness of international audiences; to encourage dialogue and collaboration between Romanian and British cultural producers; to establish a distinct profile for the Romanian Cultural Institute in London as a trusted and valuable partner for the initiation, support and implementation of cultural programmes.
Deadline for residency applications: 1 February and 15 June.
Value of residency grant: 3,400 Euro/residency, awarded for a period of 2 months.
Number of residencies awarded annually: 4 residencies.
Eligible candidates in the following fields are evaluated and selected for residencies: the visual arts, art criticism, art curatorship, museography, music, musicology, journalism, translation, research, architecture, urbanism, design, literature, literary criticism, dance, the performing arts, film, film criticism, cultural heritage, cultural management, and the social sciences (economics, psychology, international relations, law, political science, sociology, philosophy, history, the history of ideas, etc.).
In 2009, the successful applicants for residencies were Alina Şerban, curator and art critic (23 March – 20 April), David Sandor, visual artist (27 April – 25 May), Carmen Dobre, visual artist (1 June – 30 June), Catrinel Danaiata and Andreea Şaguna, doctoral students in film and television directing (July), Vlad Nancă, visual artist (1 August – 30 September), Jean-Lorin Sterian, writer, director, scriptwriter and journalist (October), Ştefan Peca, playwright (1 November – 10 December), and Ioana Păun, performance artist (11 December 2009 – 31 January 2010).

The residency programme at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Paris offers Romanians the opportunity to work in the French cultural and professional milieu; to establish contacts with professionals in their field of activity; to forge links with specific professional media in France; to create projects individually or in partnership with French cultural operators; and to contribute to the creation of an archive of artworks and projects that can then be promoted through the global network of the Romanian Cultural Institute, with the aim of bringing Romanian values to the awareness of international audiences. The programme offers residencies of up to two months to Romanian professionals from various disciplines in the humanities. The length of each individual residency is established depending upon the nature of the specific project.
Deadline for residency applications: 1 November and 1 May.
Value of residency grant: 1,500 Euro/one-month residency, or 2,500 EUR/two-month residency
Number of residencies awarded annually: 12 – 24 residencies.

3. The Enesco Society Scholarship, awarded by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London
The Romanian Cultural Institute in London and the Royal Academy of Music annually award an Enesco Society Scholarship to a first-year student at the prestigious London academy. The scholarship is intended to promote the contribution of George Enesco to the history of classical music and to nuance international perceptions of the value of the Romanian composer’s work. The scholarship was inaugurated in September 2009, the first being awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year. Students of composition, violin, piano and conducting are eligible, regardless of nationality, and are selected following auditions held by the Royal Academy of Music. The Royal Academy of Music jury will vary from year to year, and auditions will be organised in December.
The recipient of the Enesco Society Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year was Karim Said, who was chosen by a jury made up of the director of the RCI London, Gabriela Massaci, violinist and professor Remus Azoiţei, and music critic Noel Malcolm.
Karim Said is a pianist and has been a student of the Royal Academy of Music since September 2007. His exceptional talent has been remarked upon by prestigious pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, who has nurtured him in the development of his career. His musical career also inspired celebrated director Christopher Nupen to make a documentary entitled Karim’s Journey, filmed over the course of six years. The documentary had its world premiere at the London’s Barbican Centre in May 2008. Karim Said has won eight international prizes to date: First Prize and Star Prize at the Pro Piano International Competition, Bucharest 1998; Second Prize at the Gradus ad Parnassum International Competition, Kaunas, Lithuania, 2001; Third Prize at the Beethoven Intercollegiate Piano Competition, London, 2002; First Prize at the Watford Festival, U.K., 2001; Third Prize at Three Rivers Young Musician of the Year, Rickmansworth, U.K., 2004; and the Special Audience Prize and Jury Prize for Best Performance of a 20th Century Work, Weimar, Germany, 2005.
