The Department for Romanians Abroad is a specialized structure of the Romanian Cultural Institute which provides cultural and identity assistance to Romanians abroad.
The activity of the Department for Romanians Abroad concerns two major categories of non-resident Romanians: those in countries neighboring Romania (and the Balkans), and those in the diaspora. Romanian communities around the world number approximately 10-12 million people.
The Department for Romanians Abroad benefits from the services of a strong team of experts characterized chiefly by its interdisciplinarity. According to the new Organizational Chart of the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Department for Romanians Abroad runs a single service: Programs and Publications.
WHAT WE WANT
The Department for Romanians Abroad wishes to become one of the main institutional providers of cultural and identity assistance to the Romanian communities beyond the nation’s borders.
WHAT WE DO
1. Initiate and carry out cultural programs/projects/actions addressed to Romanian communities around the world;
2. Initiate contact with public or private institutions in Romania or abroad, with the goal of carrying out joint cultural events;
3. Work to ensure permanent contact between Romanian communities around the world and public and private cultural institutions in Romania in order to help find adequate financing solutions for projects and programs proposed by Romanian associations abroad;
4. Organize annual project contests publicized by Romanian language cultural publications;
5. Carries out any other attributes determined by law, as well as those expressly conferred by the Institute’s leadership.
OUR PRIORITIES
1. To organize courses in Romanian language, culture, and civilization, advanced courses in cultural management, courses for professional training, festivals, symposia, colloquia, etc., targeted at the representatives and opinion leaders of Romanian communities, with programs carried out in their location of residence and/or in Romania.
2. To organize cultural programs of as great as possible a variety (e.g., publishing events and theater, film, visual arts, music, and dance programs).
3. To award prizes and scholarships.
4. To organize contests.
5. To donate books, publications, printed materials, etc.
6. To establish partnerships with institutions, NGOs, and associations in Romania and abroad for the co-financing, with the RCI’s internal budget or in public-private partnerships, of programs, projects, and cultural events.
7. To participate in European strategies and programs for cultural and identity assistance targeted at national minorities (in this case those of the Romanian ethnicity) in countries neighboring Romania or other countries around the world.
