Roman Tolici. Grafik und Malerei
Curator: Oana Tanase

08 September – 08 November 2011

Opening:
08 September 2011, 18:30

Ross+Ross Galerie is presenting its inaugural exhibition, the first solo show in Stuttgart of the work of Roman Tolici, one of the most important figure of his generation of young artists from Romania. The exhibition, curated by Oana Tanase, presents a broad view of his works from the last five years, and also includes his recent series of painting, 10, to be displayed for the first time

Convinced that “a painted image fills in the missing spaces in our perception of the world and of ourselves” Roman Tolici displays a direct engagement with painting, and less with the history of painting, which is in keeping with his belief that one learns more by looking with dramatic intensity at a singular detail than an overwhelming totality, looking more towards oneself and less outwardly.

“I develop neither protests nor solutions. I am chiefly trying to explore the beauty born beneath our eyes. And – why not? – sharing my fascination for this beauty with others might prove just as useful in today’s world as rebellion against dictatorship (...) I am studying man and his transient condition. Beauty and death – these are the magic words, I believe, in understanding our relationship with reality. I accumulate questions and answers, which I add to mankind’s giant collection of questions and answers.”

A catalogue will be launched in conjunction with the exhibition.

Roman Tolici (b. 1974 in Ghetlova, USSR) lives and works in Bucharest. Recent solo exhibitions include NOBODY, Jecza Gallery, Timisoara, Romania (2011); ACTION, Virtuell-Viseull Dorsten, Germany (2010); FOREVER YOUNG, Collectiva Gallery, Berlin (2009); IT COULD HAPPEN TOMORROW, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest (2008); PARK, Gallery of Contemporary Art, Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu (2008). His works were included in several group exhibitions in Bucharest, Vienna, San Francisco, Frankfurt, New York, Graz, Tallinn, Regensburg, and Paris.
